As young queer people, we live on the achievements of previous generations. Can they give us the strength to continue standing up for all our multifacetedness, for all the potential of lived ambiguity? José Esteban Muñoz explores this idea in his book Cruising Utopia. He sees queerness as a state of being not yet achieved, a desire for change directed towards the future. Queerness shines on the horizon – and yet becomes more tangible through a return to queer practices and aesthetics that were thought to have been forgotten.
The performance cruising – a queer glimpse leads the audience through the Schönholzer Heide. There they meet seven people whose encounters radically defy normative conventions. The search for more contains the tensions of queer encounters, then as now: self-exploration and alienation, coercion and liberation, adaptation and subversion.
