Description:
\nThis workshop is aimed at visual storytellers with an emphasis on
\nphotography but the techniques and issues covered will overlap with film
\nand other media. We will look at the obstacles and practical solutions
\nto long-term projects \u2013 how to identify a story, how to gain access to
\nspaces and communities, and the ethics involved. The workshop will ask
\nquestions like, How am I uniquely qualified to tell this story? Should I
\nbe telling this story? What is my obligation to the people and spaces I
\nwork in and with? How do I create a story about a very personal topic?
\nWe will talk about real life experiences and will also touch on how to
\nmake things happen and what to do with finished projects \u2013 funding,
\npublishing and exhibition\/screening possibilities. The workshop will be
\ntheoretical (we\u2019re not going to make work together) but the participants
\nare expected to ask questions, be open and respectful, and be willing to
\nparticipate in group discussions.<\/p>\n
Who can join:
\nAnyone interested in visual storytelling. Maybe you\u2019ve already created
\nstories and are looking for inspiration, maybe you\u2019re too scared to
\nstart, maybe you\u2019re in the middle of a project and looking for guidance.
\nNo previous experience in necessary and people from all backgrounds and
\ncultural experiences are encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n
About the workshop holder:
\nAlexa Vachon is a Canadian born, New York educated, Berlin based
\nphotographer and photojournalist who works on assignment for various
\ninternational publications and on long-term projects focusing on women\u2019s
\nrights and human rights. Vachon has recently self-published two books \u2013
\none about a football team for refugee women in Berlin and one about
\nqueer and feminist pornography. Another book, following The Knife on
\ntheir last international tour, was published in 2017. Vachon was a 2018
\nfinalist for the PH Museum Women Photograph Grant, is a member of Women
\nPhotograph and was a European Journalism Fellow at the Freie Universit\u00e4t
\nin 2016-2017.<\/p>\n
